No one knows for certain the exact date Tarot appeared in the world and there are many theories regarding it's origins. There are some documented facts, many myths, and legends. However, there is a consensus that Tarot cards, in their current form, date back to the late 14th or the early 15th Century Italy. The Chinese, Indians, Egyptians and or Gypsies have all been considered as contributors to if not creators of the Tarot.
Tarot was not widely understood as a divinatory tool until the 18th Century when cartomancers began appearing in the various courts of Europe. Today one can find readers and querrants all over the world with many interpretive card decks, themes, and symbolisms.
or the art of divination through the use of playing cards revolves around the belief that playing cards can be used to ascertain a lucid understanding of current situations, as well as, the potential future of a querrant . How this is actually achieved brings some debate. Some believe the process is guided by supernatural forces, others believe the cards help them tap into a collective super-consciousness and still others believe it is a tool to reveal their own hidden subconscious wisdom. The divinatory symbols of the cards are derived mostly from the Kabbalah and Medieval Alchemy but many ascribe ancient Egypt as the original source of the Tarot's wisdom.
Tarot consists of a 78-card deck, each card featuring a different symbolic picture. The standard 78-card deck has a set of 22 cards, known as the Major Arcana and 56 cards, – 4 suits of 14 cards each, – which are akin to the typical playing cards and are called the Minor Arcana.
